Son nom complet est State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. La capitale et la m\u00e9tropole de Rhode Island est Providence. L&rsquo;\u00c9tat fait partie de la r\u00e9gion de la Nouvelle-Angleterre qui se situe au Nord-Est des \u00c9tats-Unis.<\/p><p>La premi\u00e8re mention du nom Rhode Island par \u00e9crit (Isola di Rhode) a \u00e9t\u00e9 faite par l&rsquo;explorateur Giovanni da Verrazano en 1524 (il fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 une \u00eele pr\u00e8s de l&#8217;embouchure de la baie de Narragansett, qu&rsquo;il compare \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00eele de Rhodes en M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e). Certains attribuent le nom \u00e0 l&rsquo;explorateur n\u00e9erlandais Adriaen Block qui a nomm\u00e9 cette r\u00e9gion Roode Eylandt, ce qui signifie l\u2019\u00ab \u00eele rouge \u00bb en n\u00e9erlandais en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 l&rsquo;argile rouge des c\u00f4tes semblable \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00eele grecque de Rhodes et c&rsquo;est ce nom qui fut plus tard anglicis\u00e9 en Rhode Island lorsque la r\u00e9gion passa sous contr\u00f4le britannique.<\/p><p>La colonie de Rhode Island a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9e en 1644 par Roger Williams, un colon non conformiste exil\u00e9 de la colonie de la baie du Massachusetts pour ses avis religieux. Il a fond\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re ville de la colonie, Providence, pr\u00e8s de la baie de Narragansett comme un centre pour la libert\u00e9 religieuse. Le territoire pour la colonie avait \u00e9t\u00e9 achet\u00e9 aux Am\u00e9rindiens locaux, ainsi qu&rsquo;au roi d&rsquo;Angleterre. Avant la fondation de la colonie, la r\u00e9gion avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 re\u00e7u la visite du marin n\u00e9erlandais Adriaen Block dans les premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es du XVIIe si\u00e8cle.<br \/>En 1652, Rhode Island est la premi\u00e8re r\u00e9gion d&rsquo;Am\u00e9rique du Nord qui adopte une loi pour supprimer l&rsquo;esclavage ; n\u00e9anmoins, les n\u00e9gociants de Providence et de Newport continuent \u00e0 gagner des b\u00e9n\u00e9fices massifs du commerce des esclaves avec d&rsquo;autres colonies.<br \/>L&rsquo;\u00c9tat est l&rsquo;une des 13 colonies am\u00e9ricaines qui particip\u00e8rent \u00e0 la guerre d&rsquo;ind\u00e9pendance des \u00c9tats-Unis ; le gouvernement d\u00e9clare son ind\u00e9pendance le 4 mai 1776. En revanche, il fut le dernier \u00e0 ratifier la Constitution des 13 colonies originelles.<br \/>Apr\u00e8s la guerre, Rhode Island devient un centre industriel. En 1824, Providence devient le plus grand centre pour les transactions diamantaires.
